Music
The second term has been a busy and productive time for the Lower and Upper Elementary Students. In Theory, they have reviewed the notes, rhythm and duration of notes, time signature and form of music. The students were introduced to different harmonies and intervals, and were asked to perform different tasks such as writing the harmonies and intervals on staff paper by first listening and recognizing them orally. To this end, they have done ear training to improve their abilities in recognizing the notes, harmonies, and intervals. Also, the students were introduced to different families of instruments in the orchestra and have studied how they are organized in a symphony. They were encouraged to listen for and recognize the different instruments while attending the Vancouver Symphony in February.
In Performance, the Lower and Upper Elementary students have rehearsed various types of music. With their recorders, they have concentrated on learning and improving their techniques. The students have been encouraged to practice their recorders both individually and all together in their groups.
For Music Appreciation, the Lower and Upper Elementary students were introduced to music from the Middle Ages. The students have learned the different terminologies relating to this particular music such as monophony, polyphony, organum, and chant. They were introduced to the steps in writing a monophony and asked to compose their own versions. The final group project was to organize their music to compile a chant. The chant was played on the piano and the students had an opportunity to listen to their own composition.
